Dear PC Doctor:
I hope you can help!
I went to use my laptop this morning. It asked for my password, as usual, but rejected it. I did NOT change my password. What can I do? How can I get into my computer? The screen is completely blank other than my user name and the spot to enter my password.
It’s a running Windows 10.
Thanks,
Mari
Dear Mari:
That is a bummer and I sorry it happened to you.
You can reset your device to choose a new password, however this option will permanently delete your data, programs, and settings. If you mostly use cloud-based apps and storage, this won’t be so terrible.
To reset your device, which will delete data, programs, and settings, press the Shift key while you select the Power Circle with line Power icon button > Restart in the lower-right corner of the screen. On the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC. Select Remove everything.
There may be other ways to get into your computer without resetting everything – If you have a trusted computer repair shop, this might be a good job for its technicians.
I hope this helps.
Until next time,
Happy computing!
