Diane with Guadalupe and Family and Friends

Diane Nassif, who lives in Petersham, will present photos and details of her journey to a small mountain village in El Salvador, made early in 2018, with a delegation of Boston-area Unitarian Universalists and congregants from the Kansas City Christian Church. This group of people has been visiting the village, El Higueral, for the past 25 years, since the end of the civil war in El Salvador. The villagers are caught in the maelstrom of climate change and economic devastation, yet they have created a community that is self-sufficient and supportive of all of its members – with a little help from their friends from the North. In her talk she hopes to share what she learned from the villagers and her fellow travelers. She will also encourage attendees to consider the meaning of church, community, and colonialism in today's world, and to shed some light on the real impact to Salvadorans of the current TPS and DACA policies of the US.
