Dear PC Doctor:

I got a weird email message and I think my Instagram account has been breached. What can I do to protect my account?

Thanks,

Steph

Dear Steph:

I’m sorry that happened to you!

If you think your account has been hacked but the hacker hasn’t locked you out, the first thing to do would be to change your password. When you’re in your account, click on the little cog picture and choose Change Password. You’ll need to enter your old password and then choose a new one.

Another measure you can take is to revoke access to any suspicious third-party apps. From your profile, click on Apps and Websites, and see which apps you’ve used and may have granted different levels of access to. You can change the settings from there.

Third, consider turning on two-factor authentication. If you set up two-factor authentication, you'll be asked to enter a special login code or confirm your login attempt each time someone tries accessing Instagram from a new device.

I hope this helps!
Until next time,
Happy computing!
