Dear PC Doctor:

How can I delete the email and Facebook accounts of my partner who has died? I do not have the passwords but I know the account names.

Thank you,

Dear Sad:

I am very sorry for your loss.

Your email provider could probably help you to delete that account. If it is a local company, like Crocker Communications, contact them directly and explain your situation. If it is a large national email service, like Yahoo, there will be instructions on the support page. If you do a search for “How do I delete my Yahoo account when I don’t know the password?” there is a snail mail address for the office whose job it is to help people delete accounts when a loved one has died.

Regarding Facebook, search for this: “How do I request the removal of a deceased family member’s Facebook account?” And you will be taken to their FAQ page. You will also be given the option to leave the page intact as a Memorialized Account.

I hope this helps.
