Dear PC Doctor:

I’m looking for ways to free up storage on my mac computer. Call me a dinosaur, but I’m not that crazy about moving all my personal stuff to cloud storage. Are there tricks and tips I can use just on my computer?

Thanks,

Dan

Dear Dan:

Apple support suggests a few methods for freeing up storage, among them:

  • Deleting shows you’ve already watched. To do this, open your iTunes and choose iTunes > Preferences, then click Advanced, then Optimize Storage, then Automatically Delete Watched Movies and TV Shows.
  • Setting your trash to empty automatically: From the Finder, choose Finder > Preferences, then click Advanced, then Empty Trash Automatically, then Remove Items from the Trash After 30 Days.
  • Deleting unneeded email: In the Mail app, choose Mailbox > Erase Junk Mail. If you no longer need the email in your Trash mailbox, choose Mailbox > Erase Deleted Items.
  • You can also compress your files, which keeps them on your computer but makes them take up less space.

Hopefully, one or more of these strategies will appeal to you.

Until next time,
Happy Computing!
